GMail Auctions

Want to use GMail? People are selling invites on Ebay… I guess I could have made a quick buck with my invite… Too late now unless, say, Jerome Chausse wants jchausse@gmail.com… In other news, I just learned that you can’t use GMail with Safari. What’s up with that?

By the way, don’t send anything to my GMail address that you actually want me to read in a reasonable amount of time… I’m not exactly prepared to use GMail for EVERYTHING, and since I can’t access my other mail accounts via GMail, it’s strictly a toy right now.

MP3 Project

For a number of reasons (including random whim) I’ve decided to dust off a programming project I started 3 years ago. It’s a VB.NET project (well, it is NOW), it involves the Internet and MP3 files, and, considering I thought it was a cool idea 3 years ago, and it STILL sounds like a cool idea (especially since I was SURE someone would have beat me to it at LEAST two years ago) it probably WILL be very cool. It’s called GetMyTunes.com - and you will want it ;)

I have GMail!

I’ve been invited to participate in the GMail beta from Google. For those who don’t know, GMail is web-based mail with built-in Google style searching of your own mail, and 1 Gigabyte of storage. That’s right… GIGABYTE. I haven’t had much time to play yet, but the notable features are:

  • NO folders - instead you have labels… Thereby allowing one mail to be categorized in many different ways.
  • You can put a “star” next to certain emails, the star meaning whatever you want it to mean - but you can find the emails quickly.
  • And, of course, Google search of your mail. Though I only have one mail so far, so this isn’t very fun yet.

Oh, and this is neat: a very quick way to skim past a lot of spam:

Show indicators - Display an arrow ( >) by messages sent to my address (not a mailing list), and a double arrow ( >> ) by messages sent only to me.

Sadly, there’s no way to import other POP3 mail (as of yet). Spam away: jchausse@gmail.com

More chaos…

The site may get screwy once again for the next day or so… There’s been a change in plans regarding hosting. This will all make sense eventually, I assure you ;)

Less Ugly

Today’s progress towards restoring Chausse.org to its old self is brought to you by PHP’s “include()” function. That makes this my first site ever to use actual PHP code. It’s only one function mind you, but I’m quite proud of my work, nonetheless.

Yes, I know there are some dead links and missing bits on the site, still, but I’ll address them shortly. I’m up way too late at the moment.

Oh yeah…

My usual email address is working just fine now :)

OK… Made It

OK, here we are at the new hosting service… Hey, this isn’t so bad :) Now, where did I put that PHP book?

About to Experience Technical Difficulties

Chausse.org is moving to a new hosting service. The new hosting service does not support ColdFusion (the language this site uses), so it will require redevelopment with PHP. I need to move it before I will have the chance to A.) Learn PHP B.) Redesign the site in it :) The reason I have to move right now is that I had PLANNED on moving it for a while, but just realized that my current hosting plan (paid yearly) is just about up, and if I don’t move RIGHT NOW, I will have to pay for an entire year of service I won’t use.

So, for a period of time, this site will convert to a very generic Blogger template based site, and will ONLY contain the blog. The other stuff will be safely put aside, to be returned later.

My email may experience some hiccups in the next couple of days, so you might prefer to reach me at my work address of jchausse@g—-e.net (replace the dashes with the rest of my company’s name).

Incidentally, I’m moving the site to 1and1.com. Their hosting service is mind-blowingly well set up, with a clean web based UI for anything you’d possibly want to do with your space (including setting up dozens of domains to share the same hosting space). The hosting is UNIX of some sort, and all but their cheapest plans allow PHP, but no ColdFusion :( Oh well, what better way to force myself to learn a new language?

OK, off we go!

Google Your Mail

Google appears to be doing a private beta for a new service called GMail which, if successful, will clearly knock all other web based mail services out of the water.

Imagine:

1 GB of mail storage
Searching all that mail via Google
No banner ads, just their subdued AdSense text ads.

Yum!
