2004Tray Command Line

Here’s a heads-up on a very simple but useful $10 shareware program that I find handy. It’s called Tray Command Line. It’s pretty simple. You press a “hotkey” and up pops a tiny text field in which you can type in a command. These commands are whatever you define them to be. You can open “Mozilla” just by typing “m”, if you want. You can define “phone” to open up an Excel spreadsheet with a list of office phone numbers.
Most people wouldn’t really see the value in this program, but if you’re like me, working in an environment where you’re constantly opening and closing the same applications over and over again, it’s actually a LOT faster than even clicking on a “toolbar” button. Sure, you could do something with the Windows command line, and batch files and aliases and all that, but this is a much faster and elegant way to combine the user-friendliness of the point-and-click Windows world with the hardcore productivity benefits of the efficient command line usage. Give it a try.
