MyBigRiver.com on Ajaxian

MyBigRiver.com just got its first major blog write-up on Ajaxian.com. They point out (correctly) that I attach my own referral ID into the generated Amazon link. The way I see it, people who don’t have any interest in using referral links won’t care at all, and people who do use Amazon referral links will be well aware that they can (very easily) switch it to their own.

I don’t mention it on the site because I have a feeling that could cause people in the first category to strip out my ID out of spite, without considering the fact that its existence does them no harm and provides me an incentive to continue providing and enhancing the service.

In any case, the site was just launched yesterday. If there is great interest in allowing custom referral ID’s, I will certainly add the feature. I’m sure there would be enough users without their own referral ID’s that I’d still make some bucks.

  • For the record, I don’t find anything wrong with your referrer id being passed with the links. If you’ve never seen the MAB firefox plugin, it’s an Amazon store browser that uses a firefox XUL window. The MAB author did the same thing with that plugin, and included his referrer id with the purchases made through MAB. A couple of people cried foul, but most agreed that the author deservered it and were happy that at least somebody was able to take advantage of it.

  • Very, very cool site. Another one of those “wish I had thought of it first” things.

I think you could easily diffuse a lot of the referral “controversy” by putting a small line at the bottom of the page that states something like: “Note: This site receives a portion of all purchases made through these links.”

  • Hey Jeff.. Cool site..

I am currently developing something using AWS too and came upon your site googling for AWS sites. Nice work.

Also, IMO there is nothing wrong with embedding the associate id in the links. And I planned on doing that too. But still.. nice work!
