The “Bozo Explosion”

I learned a great new term today from Guy Kawasaki - the “Bozo Explosion”. It’s a staffing problem that stems initially from not having great employees.

Great employees (call them “A” employees) aren’t intimidated by other great employees, and thus tend to hire more “A” employees. “B” employees, on the other hand, don’t want to look bad, so they hire people who aren’t as good as them, i.e. “C” employees. Unfortunately, over time, this propagates to the point where the company is hiring “Z” employees. Hence, the Bozo Explosion.

Aside from avoiding the Bozo Explosion, Guy has more excellent tips on how to recruit a winning team.
