iPhone Update Arrives

iPhone version 1.1 software has been released. Update yer phones via iTunes.

New features according to the installer:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
  • Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
  • Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
  • Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
  • Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
  • Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
  • Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
  • Support for TV Out
  • Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
  • New Passcode lock time intervals
  • Adjustable alert volume

Oddly enough, the non-sortable cities in the Weather app really was annoying me… Aside from the Wi-Fi Music Store, I think I could take or leave all the rest… I’d love for Home Button double-click to bring me to Safari bookmarks…

Perry Bible Fellowship Book

Perry Bible Fellowship is, by far, the most clever comic strip online, and now it can be obtained it in book form – woohoo!

Power

I randomly decided to check in on Despair.com yesterday and found this:

That’s awesome.

Sunrise Earth

[sunrise]I randomly stumbled upon Sunrise Earth the other morning and actually started Tivo-ing it, not so much to save for later, but just to have it automatically turn on every day… Sunrise Earth is a show consisting of nothing but 60 minutes sunrises from gorgeous places around the world. Tranquil, peaceful, beautiful.

I’ve only watched brief snippets of it, but I had it on this morning while the baby was wandering around the living room getting into his usual trouble, and it dawned on me that since the show was on basic cable, it must contain commercials. I thought about how unfortunate this was – to break up such a pure, unadulterated experience of natural beauty for crass commercialism. But now I was intrigued… I had to hang out to see what would happen. Did The Discovery Channel have some trick up their sleeve to handle this gracefully, via some sort of more subdued ad unit? Then, as if to confirm my worst fears, it struck…

I’m glad I left advertising.

Sesame Street Podcast

For the parents of young’uns out there, there is now a Sesame Street podcast in the iTunes Store.

Amazon offering $0.89 DRM-Free MP3 Downloads

Amazon just started a store offering DRM Free MP3 Downloads for a measly $0.89. Well, some are $0.99, but they’re still cheaper than paying $1.19 for the same tracks at the iTunes store – and they’re encoded at an ear pleasing 256k bit rate. I don’t know what the music biz oligarchs are up to, but enjoy it while it lasts…

The Bubble Logo Cliche

First there was the Swoosh.  Then the Reflecty-Logo.  Now, the Speech Bubble.

Did someone say “bubble”? Hmm…

My Problem with Twitter

I’ve really been trying to get into Twitter… And I’ve actually gotten into the habit of updating it. The problem I have though, is that, unlike with blogs, with Twitter, you know exactly who your audience is. On a blog, you’re putting your thoughts and comments out there into the ether, but there’s a permanence to them, so that even if no one’s reading your post now, they may stumble onto it in the future. You’re broadcasting to an unknown audience over an unlimited timeframe.

With Twitter, you know exactly who’s reading your feed (Hi, Dale), and you know that no one is going to find (or even care about) your posts from months or years ago. I have friends, I have acquaintances, I know people who have a vague interest in what I’m up to, but they don’t happen to use Twitter. So every time I post, I feel a little bit silly knowing that I’m theoretically broadcasting my activities to the world, but in reality, it’s just going out to Dale. (Hi, Dale).

So, if anyone wants to help me feel a little less solipsist, you can find me on Twitter here and start “following” me. And if anyone has advice for successful Twitter-whoring to build a decent follower list, please do let me know…
